Each year, on the weekend closest to September 11th, the NH hiking community continues an act of remembrance and patriotism in response to the horrific terrorist attacks that took place in the United States on September 11, 2001, with a tribute of flying the American flag atop all 48 four-thousand foot and higher mountains in New Hampshire.
The first Flags on the 48 hike was organized by six hikers on an AMC internet message board, and since its inception has grown to include all 48 peaks. The event is internet based, where each year groups sign up to participate by selecting a mountain and raise the memorial flag. Hikers and American flags should reach their summits in time to display the flag from 12 Noon till 2:00 PM.
This year’s event will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2016.
What a truly amazing site to see! We encourage you sign up to participate or get outside and plan a hike on your own to take in the breathtaking views of this beautiful memorial. As always, Hike Onward.
